Chapter 2 – The Sasquatch (1978)

It was around this same time (meaning when I was around 15 yrs old), I remember wearing a charm. It was made of bone, about the size of a quarter but not round, more oval shaped. It was slightly thicker, around ⅜” thick. On it was carved a face of a Sasquatch. I thought it was the coolest thing ever but I have no recollection where I got it.

Over the years, the charm somehow stayed with my possessions but was buried in my old pile of  jewelry that somehow stayed with me for the duration. The charm accompanied me to St. Louis, MO, Cliffside Park, NJ, Coney Island, NY and several towns in Long Island, NY.

After graduating college, and living in Cliffside Park,  I had a vivid dream. Now you must know that I have these incredible dreams, not many, but upon waking I can’t tell whether this life was the dream or the dream was the reality.  It’s that intense and vivid.

I dreamt that Brian, my college roommate came to visit me to Puerto Rico.  He said to me that there was a very important message for me and that I must go with him on a trip.  I agreed to accompany him. We got into this car and started to drive up to the mountains in Cayey where we have this beautiful indigenous farm.  I remember clearly the stunning view of the mountains and the beautiful flamboyant trees in full bloom.

The name of our farm is The Rock. The farm got its name from this huge rock mountain that graced the property. The front view of the rock faced our house at a distance and the back, which was hidden, fell into a precipice that was difficult to discern how deep it went.  You just couldn’t see the bottom due to the height and the vegetation. This deep abyss at the other end of the mountain gave the property a certain allure and mystery. Also, the Taino natives had carved petroglyphs on the face of the rock, most of them looking alien like with oval heads and large eyes. In addition, there were many tales told of a cave somewhere on the rock, which I personally never saw.

Back to the dream… When we arrived, Brian took me to the top of the rock mountain to the entrance of the cave. There was an empty coal trolley on railroad tracks and Brian instructed me to hop in. He said to me, “Pay attention. Look closely at the wall of the cave.  There is a message for you.”

I looked carefully at the wall as the trolley started to move. I saw many petroglyphs and symbols but none that I could understand.  Finally, the trolley stopped at the other end of the cave, the light of day piercing the darkness. As my eyes started to get accustomed to the light, I saw this patch of grass, a clearing at the other end of the cave. This is when I noticed a large Sasquatch drinking from a faucet (how random that there was nothing anywhere in site, yet there was a faucet).  He was huge, very tall and covered in grey hair.

I’m not sure why I didn’t fear him, but I walked right up to him and looked him in the eyes.  I was stunned. Looking back at me where the most beautiful loving eyes I’ve ever seen. He was loving and full of kindness and compassion. We were held and mesmerized by the intensity of the gaze and the beautiful state it was evoking in both of us. Then we heard a noise in the bushes and as I turned to locate the source of the noise, I saw these huge flash bulbs go off blinding me for a moment.  It was the paparazzi.

I immediately became concerned with my new friend and turned to see if he was ok, but he had disappeared into the brush. I was so disappointed that I didn’t get a chance to get to know him better. When I woke up, I didn’t know where I was.  It took me several minutes to realize that it was a dream. It’s so disturbing when your dreams are so real that you lose perception of time and space. It’s a loopy experience.

Even today, I can see and feel those eyes as if I had the dream last night. Something about that dream pierced me and left me with more questions than answers. More about the Sasquatch later.  This is not the end of this story.
